Our Community
As a corporate citizen whose stakeholder reach covers over 70% of the Namibian population, Meatco takes its social responsibility very seriously. The jobs and livelihoods of thousands of Namibians and their families depend on the success of Meatco, and we work hard to help our communities in other ways too.
We are proud to support a variety of development and outreach projects such as orphanages, schools and charities through direct financial assistance, sponsorships, food donations and staff volunteer community service initiatives. The Meatco Foundation, established in 2009, is a not for profit entity which aims to work to help alleviate poverty and improve conditions among the rural subsistence farming communities in the north of the country.
40% of people in the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) live in extreme poverty as defined by the World Bank, and education and training is sparse. Meatco has already invested N$200m into the NCA since 1992, but now it will go even further. The Foundation will work with international partners and donors to help to enhance living standards, secure seed capital for business development ideas, and invest in sustainable wealth-generation initiatives.
A programme to educate farm workers within the livestock-rearing communities will be developed in partnership with an agricultural university, and Meatco's staff-volunteer community projects will be managed and expanded.
Uschi Ramakhutla, Meatco Foundation“The Meatco Foundation is a massive step that will impact the lives of many people…we would like to help 800,000 people to develop, and link up with a university or agricultural college to educate and train farmers.”
